The hidden depths of Leros
here’s a word that comes to mind when you’re on Leros – authenticity. It’s everywhere. In the numerous hamlets that effortlessly blend with nature. In the ochre and terracotta-coloured houses that give Agia Marina its stately charm. And it’s definitely in the collection of windmills still presiding over Platonos, the island’s capital. Leros is quite a big island, so renting a car isn’t a bad idea, but we were in the mood for a different kind of exploration. Our new experience on Leros was diving. Come on, who can resist the idea of discovering a sunken Junker 52 German transport aircraft? There are apparently other treasures down there –an Italian barge and a German landing ship, and there are caves with beautiful fauna and flora. The point is that because Leros is a volcanic island, the visibility underwater is high. You can see clearly whether you’re diving to a depth of 30-45m or just snorkelling, so you don’t even need to be an expert diver. Just curious.
Hidden treasures of Leros
War Museum
A network of subterranean and above-ground former ammunition depots constitute a fascinating museum that will catapult you through a history of local combat.
Saint Isidorus
A picturesque church built on an islet connected to the mainland by a small strip of land, as photogenic as the many couples who have tied the knot there.
Delve into history
If you like scuba diving, the sea around Leros boasts a rich ecosystem, caves and a few World War II shipwrecks. Equip yourselves accordingly and dive into places where the clock has stopped and the Aegean has quietly gone about its business of preserving the past.
Delicious local cuisine
The freshest fish, delicious local meat and aromatic mountain herbs are the basic ingredients that make up the cuisine of Leros. Make sure you try patsavouropita, the local version of yiaourtopita (Greek yoghurt cake) and quench your thirst with a local beverage known as “gavafa”.
Virgin Mary of Kavouradena
One of the most delightful and picturesque churches of the island is near Ksirokampos village, built on a rock on the coastline.
